What is birth trauma?

Birth trauma can occur when birth has been frightening, traumatic and negative and can impact the person giving birth and/or the birth partner.

It may be because there was a feeling of being out of control, not having been treated with respect and dignity or more directly where there was fear for life.

The symptoms vary from person to person but can include, flashbacks to the birth, nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, anger, sadness, depression, a difficulty bonding with baby or relating to your partner.

But I have a healthy baby – that’s what matters, right?!

I am passionate about helping people feeling empowered and in control in labour, no matter which path your birthing takes, you should feel well cared for and treated with kindness. You should be kept informed and feel confident in your caregiver. For you and baby to be healthy is of course important – but that’s not all that matters.

Any birth experience that was frightening for one or both parents, often with a feeling of loss of control can be traumatic, even when everything appears well from the outside.

Labours which are long, have lots of intervention or where medical problems occur are more likely to result in birth trauma.

What can help?

With hypnotherapy we work to separate the memory of the event from the negative feelings, allowing the feelings to be processed, so the memory no longer provokes the anxiety, fear, sadness or panic. This allows the person to move forward with their life.

What’s Involved?

Sessions will be individually tailored to your needs.

Each person and each birth is unique, so the sessions will be tailored to your needs, the example below gives an idea for a stand along birth trauma, if you need support with anxiety, depression or anything else the sessions can be continued to include this.

Step 1 –  Initial Consultation via Zoom (50mins, £35). We’ll discuss your birth experience (you don’t actually have to share everything, only what you’re comfortable doing) and anything else you wish to discuss.

We’ll look at how the brain works and how hypnotherapy can help you take back control. I’ll ask you some basic questions about your history so that I can create a personal treatment plan for you moving forwards.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of how your brain processes trauma, and with an MP3 to help you begin to process your experiences.

Step 2 – Hypnotherapy Session via Zoom using the Rewind Technique (50mins, £70). In this session we’ll use the brain’s existing processing system to process your birth experience, again you won’t have to talk through or share any more than you wish too.

Step 3 – Hypnotherapy Session via Zoom (50mins, £70) – this will be a positive, solution focused session  include a combination of hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and NLP, the purpose of this session is to help you reframe your birth experience so you can fully heal and move forwards.
