Today I have a lovely birth story to share with you, sometimes our local midwife unit has to close due to staffing etc., but as this mum experienced you can still create the same atmosphere in the labour ward, especially with such lovely supportive midwives.

“Hi Jade, our little boy Cameron Alan Laird arrived safely yesterday morning, 06.12.17, at 1.05am, weighing 7lbs 10oz.

I’m delighted to say that I successfully used all the hypnobirthing techniques you taught us, required no pain relief and was able to have the birthing experience I wanted.

Regular surges started at 10pm and when I called AMH I was disappointed to be told that the midwife unit was closed due to staffing issues. We were up at AMH just after 11pm and sent to the labour ward. The midwife I was assigned, Olivia, explained that although I was in labour ward I would be managed as a midwife unit patient. The Sister, Jenny, also came and explained the situation to me and reassured me that they would do all they could to make sure my experience was what I wanted.

I have to say I can’t praise the staff at AMH enough, especially my midwife, Olivia. She got me moved to a bigger room at the end of labour ward, away from the noise at the reception desk. She took care to follow what I had written in my birth plan, ensuring the lights were dimmed, arranging candles for me, a birth ball and birth mat. Olivia only came in to check on me every now and again and used the hand held doppler to check baby. My waters broke at 12.50am and I was aware that I had changed to my birth breathing. Scott buzzed to let Olivia know my waters had broken and then Cameron was born 15 minutes later. Olivia just kept a check on Cameron with the doppler and let me breathe him into the world as I had wanted. I had immediate skin to skin and Scott was able to cut the cord, which Olivia checked I was happy to have cut once it had stopped pulsating. From the start of regular surges at 10pm, labour was a total of 3hours 5mins.

I was able to stay in the same room in labour ward for the post-natal checks and we were all able to go home by 10.30am.

Thank you once again for all your help Jade and I hope my story goes some way to giving others confidence that you can have the positive hypnobirthing experience you want at the maternity hospital.”
