When many people think of Hypnobirthing, they might picture giving birth in a candlelit room with no medical intervention, calmly breathing through contractions while the birth partner provides supportive touch and positive affirmations. This image may not be entirely accurate, however, as Hypnobirthing can be used by anyone, regardless of their birth plan or preferences.

Hypnobirthing is not a type of birth!

Hypnobirthing is about learning technique that combine relaxation, visualisation, and self-hypnosis to help, reduce anxiety, manage pain and stay calm and focused during childbirth. It’s not a method of giving birth itself, but rather a way of preparing for and coping with the experience of childbirth. As such, it can be used by anyone who is planning to give birth, whether that birth will be natural, medicated, or surgical.

In fact, many Hypnobirthing practitioners will specifically work with people who are planning medicated or surgical births, as these types of births can sometimes be associated with more anxiety and stress than a natural birth. The relaxation and visualisation techniques taught in Hypnobirthing can be just as beneficial in these situations as they are in a natural childbirth, helping you to stay calm and focused even in the midst of medical interventions and unexpected challenges.

Jade works a lot with people going for induction and runs the Positive Induction website and Positive Induction Facebook Group. Because hypnobirthing is even more important when it comes to induction!

It’s also worth noting that not all people who choose to give birth naturally use Hypnobirthing, and not all people who use Hypnobirthing choose to give birth naturally. The two are not mutually exclusive, and there is no one “right” way to give birth. Hypnobirthing can be used to help in any kind of birth experience that feels right for you, whether that means an unmedicated birth, an epidural-assisted birth, or a planned C-section.

So if you’re curious about Hypnobirthing but worried that it might not be right for your birth plan, don’t be! It’s a versatile technique that can benefit anyone, no matter what kind of birth you’re planning.
