Hypnobirthing – what does the name make you think of?

Sometimes you’ll see hypnobirthing teachers almost excusing the hypno part, stressing the importance of all the other things we share in class, downplaying the hypno part as relaxation, saying they wish there was a better name for it.

As a clinical hypnotherapist, I believe Hypnobirthing is the perfect name for it, because in our classes we have both hypnosis and birth education.

And of course the other stuff is important! Learning about your body, how it works, writing your birth plan, the stages of birth, how to make informed decision… it’s all important.

But the hypnosis element is vital, otherwise you’re not actually doing hypnobirthing!

And listening to a nightly relaxation track isn’t enough!

The ‘hypo’ part is what makes hypnobirthing different to other antenatal classes, it’s the part that will help you be fully prepared consciously and subconsciously.

Hypnosis is not just relaxation.

I understand why some instructors minimise the hypno part, there’s still so much scepticism around hypnosis, but, as a hypnotherapist I believe it’s vital in birth preparation, and it will help you prepare for the birth you and baby need.

Self hypnosis is a skill that I can teach you, and I’ll also use hypnotherapy to help you overcome challenges, and be as prepared as you possibly can consciously and subconsciously.

Self hypnosis will help you to work with your body, so that you can access your birthing instincts.

It will also mean you are less likely to fight against your body.

Everyone comes to hypnobirthing with some level of fear around birth, for some it’s debilitating and nearly prevented them having a baby, for others it’s a belief that you need to just bare it, make it through then forget about it, some people don’t have as a deep a level of fear but they aren’t exactly looking forward to birth.

Hypnotherapy helps you release fear, whilst still understanding that the decision we make have risks.

Everyone has images in their mind that aren’t helpful, whether it’s a past experience of their own, or images of birth from TV and movies that aren’t realistic.

Hypnotherapy can help you change the images of birth, adding things that are useful to you. That doesn’t mean that we only have one view of birth, it’s about having an understanding of the range of experiences.

Many people feel uncertain, and struggle to voice their concerns, when you’ve never given birth before it can be overwhelming, not knowing what to ask, or when you do know what you want to ask, finding it hard to find you voice.

Hypnotherapy helps you find your confidence and voice to ask the questions you want to and advocate for yourself in labour.

Hypnobirthing is hypnotherapy and birth education working together.

And as a hypnotherapist I’m committing to focusing even more on the hypnotherapy aspect of our hypnobirthing classes in 2023.

If you’re expecting a baby and want to be prepared both consciously and subconsciously, you can book one of our group courses, or book a one to one course with Jade. If you’d like to chat with Jade in the phone first to see what option is best for you, you can do that here.
